Chest Pain

Chest pain can be very alarming. In fact, it is one of the most common reasons why people are rushed to the emergency room. Depending on the root cause of the pain, the symptoms may vary in intensity and location. Pressure, tightness, and shortness of breath are often reported. While it may not necessarily be associated with your heart, it is essential to seek medical attention if the pain lasts longer than a few minutes, if it intensifies, or if it returns.

Causes of Chest Pain

Depending on the source of it, chest pain may vary in intensity, duration, and location. It can be triggered by a variety of conditions and illnesses, which range from benign to severe. Some of the most common causes associated with chest pain include:

  • Heart Conditions:

Perhaps the most serious of causes, heart-related conditions such as heart attacks, myocarditis, angina, and pericarditis often lead to chest pain. People frequently report feeling pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, and pain along the chest and limbs when experiencing these conditions

  • Muscle or Bone Conditions:

Sore muscles, compression fractures, bruised ribs, and impacted nerves are some of the most common muscle and bone conditions related to chest pain. Other more serious conditions such as osteoporosis and fibromyalgia are also known to cause discomfort.

  • Gastrointestinal Conditions:

Gallstones, acid reflux, gallbladder inflammation, and esophagus disorders have also been known to cause burning chest pain. Patients have also reported an unpleasant taste in the mouth resulting from stomach acid. For many, these symptoms tend to worsen right after consuming food or while lying down.

  • Fibromyalgia:

Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a widespread chronic condition that affects the muscles and bones, causing hypersensitivity to pain and external stimuli. Experts believe that fibromyalgia can modify the way our brain and spinal cord receive and process physical signals and amplify them.
