Diabetic Pain

Diabetic Pain

Diabetic pain, also known as diabetic neuropathy, is a nerve damage condition that can develop in people who have diabetes. Glucose can impact nerves all throughout the body; however, it is more commonly known for damaging those located in the legs and feet. While some patients experience mild symptoms, others feel disabling pain levels, capable of significantly lowering their quality of life.

Causes of Diabetic Pain

The root cause of diabetic neuropathy is the nerve damage caused by high blood sugar over long periods of time. High blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels may also aggravate this condition. Diabetes-related neuropathy can be categorized into four different types depending on the area of the body affected:

  • Autonomic Neuropathy:

This type of neuropathy traditionally affects the digestive system but can also impact blood vessels, urinary system, and sex organs. The most commonly reported symptoms include bloating, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, and heartburn. Treatment is determined based on the affected areas.

  • Peripheral Neuropathy:

Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy. It frequently affects the extremities, especially the legs and feet. Symptoms include tingling and burning sensations, numbness, increased sensitivity to the touch, and ulcers in the feet. Pain can range from mild to severe, and it worsens at night.

  • Proximal Neuropathy:

Also known as diabetic amyotrophy, this kind of neuropathy often affects the nerves in the buttocks, hips, thighs, and legs. It has also been reported to impact the abdominal and chest areas. Symptoms include intense pain, muscle weakness, and stomachaches.

  • Focal Neuropathy:

Focal neuropathy, or mononeuropathy, tends to impact a specific nerve, oftentimes leading to vision loss, difficulty focusing, eye pain, facial paralysis on one side, numbness, and weakness in the hands.

  • Diagnosing Diabetic Pain:

In order to correctly identify and diagnose the source of your diabetic pain, our physicians will gather your symptoms and conduct a series of examinations during your visit. The first step is to perform a thorough physical exam and carefully evaluate your medical and family history. In addition, your doctor may suggest getting blood work, x-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to best single out your condition.
