Eric Alcaraz

MD

We welcome Dr. Alcaraz to Principle Spine and Pain. Dr. Alcaraz has extensive experience in interventional pain management, having worked the last 10 years in Houston and neighboring locations, most recently in Pasadena, Texas. He graduated from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences in 2004, followed by his service in the military, working as a flight surgeon in the active-duty Air Force through 2009. It was here that his interest in pain management was sparked. Pilots performing high “g” or aeronautical maneuvers would often develop acute and chronic neck and back pain and injuries. He would often be intrigued by what else can be offered to patients outside of the typical rest and recovery routine. In addition, he was exposed to the traumas of war while deployed to Balad, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, including patients sustaining such injuries as traumatic brain injuries and amputations.

Upon completion of his service to the military, his prior experiences influenced his future residency training. He completed his specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Subsequently, upon completion, he was finally able to pursue his long sought after goal of interventional pain management. He completed a fellowship in interventional spine at Lags Spine and Sportscare/Joint and Pain Treatment Center in Santa Barbara, CA in 2013.

Given his training background, Dr. Alcaraz takes a holistic approach to patient care and subscribes to a multidisciplinary approach to pain management. He sees interventional pain management as the “middle ground” between conservative care and surgical considerations. He has been performing interventional procedures for the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, as well as pelvic and peripheral joint procedures. In addition, he also performed more advanced procedures to include spinal cord stimulation trials/implants, ViaDisc, peripheral nerve stimulation. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and North American Modulation Society

Dr. Alcaraz spends his time away from work traveling with family and engaging in any and every sports activity. He loves to encourage his kids to practice what he preaches by staying active with baseball and tennis, while also attending any sporting events he can find his way into. More recently, he has initiated his kids into his yearly tradition of running the Chevron Half Marathon.
